4th & 5th Art Challenge

  1. ) Paint or Draw a picture creating VALUE using INTERMEDIATE COLORS.

Value: The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.

Intermediate colors: made by mixing equal amounts of a primary and a secondary color.

2.) Paint, draw or make a collage using a COLOR SCHEME.

Color Scheme: an arrangement or combination of colors, especially as used in interior decoration.

3.) Make an artwork using only GEOMETRIC SHAPES or ORGANIC SHAPES. This can be done with paint, drawing or collage.

Geometric shapes such as circles, triangles or squares have perfect, uniform measurements and don't often appear in nature.

Organic shapes are associated with things from the natural world, like plants and animals.

4.) Make a piece of artwork that shows a FORM in a ONE POINT PERSPECTIVE.

Form: An element of art that is three-dimensional and encloses volume; includes height, width AND depth (as in a cube, a sphere, a pyramid, or a cylinder).

One Point Perspective: A drawing has one-point perspective when it contains only one vanishing point on the horizon line. This type of perspective is typically used for images of roads, railway tracks, hallways, or buildings viewed so that the front is directly facing the viewer. ... These parallel lines converge at the vanishing point.

5.) Create a piece of art showing SYMMETRY and BALANCE.

Symmetry: the quality of being made up of exactly similar parts facing each other or around an axis.

Balance: a condition in which different elements are equal or in the correct proportions.

6.) Make a artwork using CONTRASTING colors.

Contrasting Colors: In color theory, complementary colors (or “opposite” colors) that are directly across from one another on a basic color wheel.

7.) Draw a LANDSCAPE that shows two different things in two different SPACES on the paper. Meaning, one thing is far away and one thing is very close up (or near).

Landscape: Natural Scenery

Space: An element of art by which positive and negative areas are defined or a sense of depth achieved in a work of art.

8.) Draw a picture that has an EMPHASIS on the color purple OR a balloon.

Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

9.) Make an ORIGINAL comic book character displaying some sort of MOVEMENT.

Original: Created directly and personally by a particular artist; not a copy or imitation.

Movement is the path the viewer’s eye takes through the work of art, often to focal areas. Such movement can be directed along lines, edges, shape, and color within the work of art.

10.) Draw or paint a piece of clothing showing TEXTURE and a PATTERN.

Texture: An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.

Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art.

11.) Make an ABSTRACT PORTRAIT.

Abstract: art that does not attempt to represent external reality, but seeks to achieve its effect using shapes, forms, colors, and textures.

Portrait: a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.

12.) Make a piece of artwork that is a NON-OBJECTIVE.

Non Objective: A type of abstract or non-representational art. It tends to be geometric and does not represent specific objects, people, or other subjects found in the natural world.

13. Make a REALIST  STILL-LIFE

Realist art is generally the attempt to represent subject matter truthfully.

Still-Life: a painting or drawing of an arrangement of objects, typically including fruit and flowers and objects contrasting with these in texture, such as bowls and glassware.
