Basic Color Wheel

Red

Orange

Yellow

Green

Blue

Purple

These are the basic colors in a color wheel. Think about a rainbow. If you know the rainbow order, you can twist those colors into a circle to get the wheel.

Primary and Secondary Colors

Primary Color: The three primary colors are RED, YELLOW and BLUE. These three colors can not be made by using other colors.

Secondary Color: These three colors are made by using two primary colors and mixing them together. The three secondary colors are ORANGE, GREEN and PURPLE.

You can figure out the order of the color wheel by placing the three primary colors in a triangle and then placing the secondary color that the two primary colors make, when mixed together, between them.

Warm and Cool Colors

The color wheel can be split into warm and cold colors.

Warm colors RED, ORANGE and YELLOW evoke warmth because they remind us of things like the sun or fire.

Cool colors GREEN, BLUE and PURPLE

evoke a cool feeling because they remind us of things like water or grass.

There are three pairs:

RED and GREEN

YELLOW and PURPLE

ORANGE and BLUE

Intermediate Colors

Intermediate colors (also known as tertiary colors) are the colors that come between the primary and the secondary colors on the color wheel.

When naming these colors, the primary name always comes first because the word primary means 1st.

Color Schemes

In art and design, a color scheme is an association of colors based on an organizational system. Basically, it's a set of colors that work well together to create a unified aesthetic.
